A letter from our Free Your Mind Chair

In light of the recent suicide of the MARTA CEO Jeffrey Parker, someone we assumed had it all. We assumed he had no worries, fears, and no doubts. But one day he decided he couldn’t take it anymore. So, he decided to step in front of a Marta train and end the pain.

Suicide does not have a face, gender, race, socio-economic class, or age. We must ask ourselves how much time to do we take to truly get to know others? We must be intentional about getting to know and understand the people we say we care about and love. We must ask ourselves, are we asking the vital questions? Not just, “Hey how you doing?”, but rather “How are you really doing?”. “I see your smile, but what’s really going on?”. Let’s move away from the superficial. True knowledge and understanding are always below the surface. Parish Jenkins, BSN,
